STATISTICS
- Cities must save at least 90% of what is described as healthy and treatable animals to be considered a “No Kill” city. So what about the other 10%? Those animals who are sick, need extensive medical attention, are special needs, and/or have treatable behavioral issues are euthanized. Mainly due to lack of funds and resources to care for them.
- No kill-shelters are becoming more and more overcrowded, depleting their funds to take care of animals and having to turn down rescuing animals in high kill shelters.
- It’s estimated that around one million animals are abused every year. 250,000 alone are victims of animal hoarding. There is also a close relationship between animal and domestic violence. About 71% of domestic violence survivors reported that their abuser had also injured, killed, or threatened to kill the household pet.
- About 6.5 million animals enter shelters across the US annually. Approximately 1.5 million of those animals are euthanized due to lack of funds and resources.
- Approximately 47% of dogs and 43% percent of cats who were abandoned at shelters by their owners was due to behavioral or health issues. Rescue organizations are then financially responsible for correcting these issues so the animal can get adopted.
